Bounty Land Warrants From 1775 to 1885

Bounty land warrants were grants of free land issued to veterans in return for military service from the time of the  Ã¢â‚¬â€¹Ã¢â‚¬â€¹Revolutionary War through 1855 in the United States. They contained the surrendered warrant, a letter of assignment if the warrant was transferred to another individual, and other papers pertaining to the transaction. What Are Bounty Land Warrants in Detail Bounty land is a grant of free land from a government given to citizens as a reward for service to their country, generally for military-related service. Most bounty-land warrants in the United States were given to veterans or their survivors for wartime military service performed between 1775 and 3 March 1855. This includes veterans who served in the American Revolution, the War of 1812 and the  Ã¢â‚¬â€¹Mexican War. Bounty land warrants werent automatically issued to every veteran who served. The veteran first had to apply for a warrant and then, if the warrant was granted, he could use the warrant to apply for a land patent. The land patent is the document which granted him ownership of the land. Bounty land warrants could also be transferred or sold to other individuals.   They were also used as a way to provide evidence of military service, especially in cases where a veteran or his widow did not apply for a pension How They Were Awarded Revolutionary War bounty land warrants were first awarded through an  act of Congress on 16 September 1776. They were last awarded for military service in 1858, although the ability to claim bounty land previously earned extended until 1863. A few claims that were tied up in the courts caused lands to be granted as late as 1912. What You Can Learn From Bounty Land Warrants A bounty land warrant application for a veteran of the Revolutionary War, War of 1812 or the Mexican War will include the individuals rank, military unit and period of service. It will also generally provide his age and place of residence at the time of application. If the application was made by the surviving widow, it will usually include her age, place of residence, the date and place of marriage, and her maiden name. Censorship Of A Wide Range Of Books - 1798 Words

From fiction to nonfiction, from romance to horror, from children’s to adults, and from classics to newcomers, censorship of a wide range of books is becoming more popular. Many forget how much influence a person can receive through the words in a book or the pictures throughout a story. The issue of â€Å"morally destructive and offensive literature† has become a common concern among people worldwide. However, the banning of certain books can be looked at in two completely different ways: protecting the precious minds of humankind, young or old, or forbidding those minds from reading the particular topics that were put in place to be learned. Regardless of the content inside of them, books are the greatest teachers in the world. Why†¦show more content†¦However, just because people do not agree with each other or with what is being said, that is not a reason to take it all away. Taking away books based on their content provides this idea that people are wrong in expressing their ideas and that they do not have a right to speak their mind and show their individuality. Parents, educators, librarians, and the government would beg to differ because they believe some books can be â€Å"harmful† to the mind. These â€Å"poisonous† factors would include racism, profanity, sex, violence, religion and so many other themes. Not all people are affected and challenging these themes, so it is not fair to take them away just because some people do not approve. It is important for the mind to learn about these topics because the world is not filled with all positives. Being aware of the negatives in the world and learning lessons from them is quite important to those young and old. Prohibiting books from people will not do them any good; let them self-censor and choose what they like and do not like to explore instead of taking away their privileges all together. Although many would say that a book serves as the greatest teacher a perso n could have, many do not realize how great of a best friend that a book could essentially be. Development and Evaluation of a drama peice Essay We used a ball of string as a prop to create the web. When we created the web we tried to show what it was like being kept in an environment against your will not being able to escape. Prior to the exercise we discussed the idea of being held hostage and the emotions that one would feel in that situation, so we could then inject these initial ideas into our group drama. We also tired an exercise were we realised we were not alone and that there was another hostage in the neighbouring cell, so one by one we watch as pars improvised the first meeting of the two hostages. We tried to show realistic reactions if we actually were in cells by ourselves. We finally showed everyone trying to break free from the web; many people broke away easily and did not look behind but many made the decision to go back and help others. Eventually, everybody untangled themselves from the string and it fell limp to the floor. HOW we tried to achieve this:  We tried to achieve this by having everybody in the group stand in random positions around the room and throw a ball to another person. The ball of string would eventually unravel around us in a tangled mass and that would create the individuals own enclosure, in which we had to imagine we where kept against our will, isolated from any sense of normality. We sat down but still kept the string in place around us and then began to improvise with our neighbours. The lighting used was a single torch that acted as a spot light to draw attention to each pair as they improvised whilst the studio remained blacked out. This was effective as it helped to create a scene of an isolated cell and added to the distressing and glum atmosphere. WHAT I would improve and why:  Even though it was our first time performing the web as a group; I think it very effective as we helped each other concentrate and get into character. However, I would have use mime covers if I was going to do the web again and use few sounds and words. This would symbolise the hostages calling for help and screaming at the top of their lungs but still, no body hears them. So to the rest of the world, they do not make a noise. I would improve the last part where everybody had to untangle themselves from the web as some came out of role when they got stuck and laughed about it. What I would do is stay in role but ask for help from my neighbour, as my characters as if we were escaping together. We created a joyous image of father and son getting along well together on a hiking trip. We used a water bottle as a prop which added realism to our drama piece and also altered our clothing to match each others. It symbolised father and son united and the son idolising the father and wanting to be like him. Our expressions were very over exaggerated and happy and we faced each other to show the father and son getting along just fine. In the second tablo we did, we changed the image so there was friction between father and son due to the damage of silence. In our image the father and son are still on their hiking trip but the father has his back turned and is concentrating on an imaginary map in his hand. The son is trying to get the fathers attention but is met with silence. We still used the water bottle as a prop but bother our clothing was dishevelled to symbolise carelessness and lack of interest in looking identical. Explain one key moment:  A key moment in our piece is the transition from the happy image of the father and son to the unhappy image. We moved into the second pose slowly which showed the slow break down in communication between the two. In our image, the son is trailing slowly behind the father who is busy walking ahead trying to read the map. It was important we represented the silence between the two. We tried to do this by having the father concentrate on the map and focused on getting to their destination but then have the son walking slowly behind with a bored expression on his face. How effective was the piece and why?  I think our piece was effective as the image portrayed a clear contrast between the happy father and son and the unhappy father and son. Also, we depicted the friction between the two and the reason for it which was the damage of silence. Our body language helped and also the facial expression we used.

A Destructive Society Exposed in Maggie Maggie Ess Essay ays A Destructive Society Exposed in Maggie In Maggie, Stephen Crane deals with poverty and vice, not out of curiosity or to promote debauchery but as a defiant statement voicing the life in slums. Drawing on personal experience, he described the rough and treacherous environment that persisted in the inner-city. By focusing on the Johnsons, Crane personalizes a large tragedy that affected and reflected American society as a whole. His creation of Maggie was to symbolize a person unscathed by their physical environment. Through Jimmie he attempted to portray a child raised without guidance who turned into his abusive, drunk father. Crane plays Jimmie and Maggie off of each other as opposites. The Mother and Father are depicted as failed drunken hypocrites and poor role models. Crane skillfully characterizes and stereotypes the personalities in Maggie to illustrate the influence of environment and the wretched conditions in slums. Maggie blossomed in a mud puddle and represented purity in a corrupt world. When she gets together with Pete she attempted to get out of the world she despised, but instead remained in the slum, unable to escape. Although she is repeatedly abused, Maggie continually picks up the remnants of her life despite being in a worn and sorry state. Jimmie is seen both in a good light, like his sister, as well as an evil and cruel person. In the beginning of the story, he is portrayed as the little champion of Rum Alley. However, that description merely cloaked the brutal fight that he was engaged in and the beating he later gave his sister. Later in the story, Jimmie buys some beer for an old leathery woman, but it is taken by his father. Jimmie protests in the name of justice but is not successful. The crude and abusive relationship with his father severely cripples his chances to become a benevolent adult. Instilled with poor values he did not see the world as good and bad but rather bad and worse. When he studied human nature in the gutter, and found it no worse than he thought he had reason to believe it he expressed his pessimistic and cynical attitude towards the world. The Johnsons mother is typical of a drinking, abusive, and careless mother. She stood for a hypocritical, industrializing society that was neglecting its children. When Jimmie tries to take his mother home when she has been kicked out of a bar she raises her arm and whirls her great fist at her sons face. Even after learning of Maggies death she says that shell fergive her Maggie, although she had abused and disregarded Maggie when she was alive. She displays the attitude of a society mocking law and justice when she repeatedly appears in court and lies to the judges. Crane utilizes several different manners to typify the evils that persisted in city slums. He focuses on a family, and specifically a girl in that family to expose the flaws in the family unit and the influence of environment on individuals. Maggie was the girl untouched by the evils around her, but eventually succumbs to them. Jimmie was the tough and somewhat virtuous boy who due to lack of fathership becomes corrupt. The mother was abusive, drinking and careless. They all combined to represent a destructive society.
